Adoption is rarely simple, straightforward, or uncomplicated. It is particularly difficult to explain to young children. Research clearly acknowledges the importance of having conversations about adoption with adoptees as early as possible. Picture books can provide a visual aid to foster these conversations, but the messaging must be accurate.

I recently read The Heart That Found You by Anna Schocket. The colorful book is geared toward a younger audience, so it would be appropriate for reading to children from birth to around four years of age. The word “adoption” is not in the book, but it is inferred through the story of a heart looking for love.

After the heart travels all over, it (meets another heart, who is the birth parent. The book does not go into detail about why the young heart cannot stay with that heart (the birth parent), but the young heart is adopted by an adult heart.

One thing I appreciated about this book is the incorporation of diversity. There are hearts of many colors, abilities, ages, etc. This book would be a great way to discuss with young children adoptive families can be formed with family members of different races, ethnicities, abilities, backgrounds, and more. The adoptive parent/heart in the book is a single parent, which is another point about how families can be formed when reading this book to children.

This book is a good resource for adoptive families to add to their library. While it only scratches the surface of adoption, I recommend it to other adoptive parents as a great way to begin the conversation with younger ones.
