The Emerging Leaders Candid Corner

A place where adopted adults candidly share THEIR stories & answer YOUR questions

As the fall ends and the winter begins, I spend less time out and about, usually arriving home after work when the sun has already set. November through January is often associated with gatherings, family connection, and community, but as an adult adoptee, I find that this time of year brings feelings of disconnection and fears around loyalty.

This year, I am grateful as I reflect on what has become my chosen community. The people who make space for me to show up authentically lessen those feelings of loneliness and disconnection. I am grateful for friendships, my partner, and even trusted colleagues. 2024 is one of the first years where I leveraged and engaged with a broader community of adult adoptees.

At C.A.S.E, I am on the Emerging Leaders Board and sporadically pop into the Adult Adoptee Support Group. In both groups, I have felt comfortable, seen, and understood. Hearing other adult adoptees express similar challenges, whether it be about family dynamics during the holidays, grief, or communication styles, the spectrum of conversations removes the nagging feeling of otherness. I am grateful for the other members who also show vulnerability and contribute to our growing community. The collective relief when it is acknowledged that we are not alone in our experiences allows me to honor my individual story and treat myself with care.

As we enter a new year, I look forward to time with my community at C.A.S.E and beyond. I hope you also feel empowered to lean into the spaces that make you feel safe, bring you joy, and help you heal. And remember that C.A.S.E. is here for you!
