Mr. Owens serves as Strategic Communications Manager inside CareFirst’s Federal Employee Program Operations Center where he oversees all internal and external communications for the organization. He offers more than 20 years of experience in communications in the private, non-profit, higher education, and federal sectors. He specializes in developing strategic communications strategies and in developing relationships with press contacts to improve his clients’ reputations.
Mr. Owens is experienced in creating communications strategies that target underserved populations, including youth, minority groups, faith-based organizations, and general public; he has developed national branding and marketing strategies and developed and executed crisis communications frameworks for prominent brands including Howard University, the United Negro College Fund, United Way of the National Capital Area, truth Campaign, Edelman Worldwide, and Nike, Inc. Campaign topics have included early children learning, child obesity education, substance abuse, teen anti-tobacco, hunger, health and wellness, housing, homelessness, and senior citizens.
He is also an experienced public and motivational speaker and media training expert. Mr. Owens also served as the strategic communications director for a contract with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to promote its Wellness Initiatives. As the director of media relations for Howard University, Mr. Owens managed media relations during campus visits from high-level federal VIPs, including the President of the United States, Vice President of the United States, and First Lady, all on separate occasions. Mr. Owens earned his master’s degree in integrated marketing from DePaul University. He is happily married and has two beautiful girls.
