On April 8, 2008, Mecklenburg County called and asked me to take in my grandsons for 45 days (ages 2 and 3 at that time) while they put my daughter in drug rehab. We agreed, and the social worker brought them here on April 19th. My daughter was to get them back when she completed the rehab and was clean for an additional 30 days. That never happened. In May 2010, I was told that they were going to be put up for adoption and I asked if I wanted to adopt them. So many thoughts went through my mind. Sadness for them, fear of the unknown, and anxiety to name a few. Was I ready to start over at 50 years old? We all know the answer. On June 18, 2010, I signed the papers to make it official. My grandsons became my sons. On September 20th, Marcus turned 17. Today, September 23rd, Isaiah turns 18.
We have been through many challenges (ASD, ADHD, ODD) in our years together, but we will overcome them. Nobody loves these boys as I do. Nobody wants them to succeed more than I do. I love them with all that I am. We have a great support system when we need it, and that helps a lot. Thank you to Catawba County for all the support when we need it most.
