Things change fast in the world of gender identity and sexual orientation, and the number of youth identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ+) is growing exponentially. Sadly, we know that LGBTQ+ youth still face incredible stressors at home, at school and in their communities. Parental and caregiver affirmation of children’s identities provides a tremendous protective factor for LGBTQ+ kids and teens, who, without family support, are at great risk for depression, anxiety and unhealthy risk-taking behaviors.
In order to best support LGBTQ+ youth, we know that parents and caregivers need their own specific, informed support. This webinar will provide foundational knowledge about gender identity and sexual orientation development and offer practical strategies to use at home and at school. Whether you are the parent/caregiver of a gender expansive or LGBTQ+ child, or a child welfare or mental health professional working with kids and families, this webinar will offer valuable information and concrete interventions to help support LGBTQ+ kids and teens.
