I was born to a mother who was trapped in an abusive relationship. When she fled that situation, she left me with friends who were supposed to take care of me and keep me safe. They didn’t. By the time the social workers found me, I had been beaten from head to toe. I had cigarette burns all over my body. I was immediately placed in emergency care.
Meanwhile, they had also found my older sister and they placed us together in foster care. And when I was 2.5 years old, we were adopted by our forever family and wrapped in unconditional love.
But even with all of this love, I was still struggling. While I knew I didn’t deserve what happened to me, it had left me with haunting feelings of doubt, unexplainable pain and inner conflict. I never wanted to talk about it. I tried to hide it – but the suppression of loss, grief and anger kept erupting and caused years of turmoil in my family. When my parents looked for help, C.A.S.E. was there to support us. Their counseling allowed me to be honest with my family and myself. It wasn’t easy, but it helped me deal with pent-up feelings surrounding my trauma. In therapy, I found my voice and learned how to cope with my past. Thanks to C.A.S.E., my family is happier now and so am I.
Today, I can honestly say that I’m a survivor, not a victim. I am no longer crippled by my past. I learned how to overcome pain and any difficult situation I encounter. I can handle all of it! My future is bright. I’m a junior at college, majoring in hospitality and communications. I know I’ll be empowered by what I have learned at C.A.S.E. throughout my adult life and career.
